Continuum Estate, Hospitality Building
Napa Valley, California
The clients approached us to remodel an existing stucco building and to expand it to accommodate multiple independent tasting areas which had to be oriented to take in the 180-degree dramatic views of the vineyards, valley floor, and on clear days, the San Francisco Bay.
The existing design presented an austere series of planes, set at different depths, which we embraced as a way to define the program. By infilling the gaps between the planes with glass and shading structures, we were able to define each tasting area, frame the views, provide the needed privacy and create a unique experience of discovery through the building.
The terroir of the famed Pritchard Hill area is world renowned. It was important to highlight this in part by showcasing the soil, reflected in the texture and color of the materials throughout the project. The use of color and materials also marries this hospitality space to the existing winery building nearby.
