Kitoko Winery

Napa Valley, California

After the property in Atlas Peak was burned by the wildfires in Napa County in October 2019, the client decided to change the design concept for the project and asked Nobili Marques Arquitectura to develop an underground winemaking facility. The site allowed us to do so and we designed a 14,000 square foot cave to include a tank room, barrel storage, offices and a lab, a catering kitchen and hospitality space. By placing the production facilities within the cave, the aim is to safeguard future vintages and decrease potential loss of property in the event of a fire nearby.

With the hospitality space underground we wanted to emphasize the sense of arrival by creating architectural sweeping walls and a courtyard to invite the guests into the space, and shield the view of the production entry to the winery.
